Katy is a town in Texas just west of Houston. There are train-related displays at the Katy Heritage Society Railroad Museum in a renovated depot, with an old railroad car outside. Katy became known as “Cane Island” in the early 1800s, named for the creek running through the town, a Buffalo Bayou branch. The stream was full of tall cane, not indigenous to the area. It was believed that either the Karankawa Indians or Spanish explorers cultivated it until the 1820s to help with fur trapping. James J. Crawford was granted a land grant in 1845, which included the area. The hot summers and thick clay soil made attracting settlers to the area difficult.
